Properties of HSLA Steel

High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) Steel coil and sheet contains a lower carbon content than many Carbon grades to retain the steel weldability and malleability.  Our typical chemistries utilize the following elements for strengthening:

  • Titanium
  • Columbium (Niobium)
  • Vanadium

Barsteel can offer High Strength Low Alloy steel in the following grades / minimum yield strength levels:

High-Strength, Low-Alloy (HSLA) Steel Advantages

One of the key characteristics of HSLA steel is its high strength to weight ratio.  Many applications including bridges, cranes, various supports, etc. require high strength while minimizing the weight of the part.  HSLA steel is a sound choice for this type of application.  While HSLA steel is typically more costly than standard Carbon grades, manufacturers can often find savings with HSLA as they “light weight” their parts.

Industries Using HSLA

The automotive industry uses HSLA steel to manufacture lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles. This steel also provides strength and absorbs impact for a safer driving experience.

HSLA steel properties make it an excellent material for the construction industry. Buildings, bridges, and other structural components are lighter and stronger with HSLA steel.
